With the project on the brink of collapse and the satellite network nearly deorbited, Iridium Satellite LLC was formed to acquire the assets and revive the initiative. Through strategic cost-cutting and crucial partnerships with Boeing and the Department of Defense, the Iridium network was preserved and revitalized. This transformation led to the creation of Iridium Communications Inc., which has since emerged as a global leader in satellite communications.
Elon Musk's SpaceX and Iridium: A partnership redefining global connectivity
A defining moment in Iridium’s history arrived in the mid-2000s when the need for a significant upgrade to their original satellite network became clear. This ambitious project, known as Iridium NEXT, carried a staggering cost of approximately $3 billion. Securing such a large sum seemed nearly impossible during the global financial crisis of 2008. However, Iridium’s leadership skillfully navigated this challenge by working with the French government to secure a loan through a consortium of nine French banks, with guarantees provided as an export credit for Thales Alenia, the contractor chosen to design and manufacture the Iridium NEXT satellites.
With the production phase secured, Iridium sought a launch partner for their new constellation, which comprised 66 satellites and 15 spares. After careful consideration, they made the bold decision to partner with a then-emerging aerospace company, SpaceX, founded by the now globally renowned entrepreneur Elon Musk. Although this decision involved considerable risk, given SpaceX’s relatively unproven track record at the time, the partnership offered a cost advantage, coming in at nearly half the price of more established launch providers.
Despite facing significant technical challenges during the testing phases, Iridium’s commitment to SpaceX never wavered. This partnership ultimately proved to be a game-changer, enabling Iridium to successfully launch and replace its entire satellite constellation without any service disruption.
Today, Iridium remains SpaceX’s largest customer, underscoring the success of this collaboration. The partnership between Iridium and SpaceX serves as a powerful example of how strategic collaboration and trust between companies can drive innovation and overcome formidable challenges. As Joe Darden, Iridium’s Head of Aviation Business Development, reflects, “Even after securing funding and successfully launching our first mission, there were still doubters. But that only fueled our determination. It’s a story familiar to any entrepreneur—facing skepticism and continuing to believe in your mission until you prove the doubters wrong.”

Iridium: Powering critical aviation communications beyond

Additionally, Iridium enables pilots to access real-time mission-critical information, including weather forecasts and flight plan updates, ensuring safer and more efficient flight operations. While Iridium’s satellites don’t provide in-flight entertainment, they are the only satellite service capable of delivering essential air-to-ground communications at any altitude, on any flight path, and under any weather conditions, making them indispensable to modern aviation.
Iridium’s unique satellite constellation
“The way to think about it is we have a mesh network that covers the entire globe that's constantly in motion. And each satellite can talk to its neighbours, the one to the left and to the right and the one forward and behind it in the same plane. We cross-link each satellite so that all the communication can travel around the globe if necessary. So it's really like a mesh network around the globe.” - says Joe.
Iridium’s 66 satellites are strategically distributed in groups of eleven across six orbital planes, creating a seamless global mesh of coverage. Unlike most communications satellites that are placed in geosynchronous orbit (GEO) at approximately 35,000 km above the Earth’s surface, Iridium’s constellation operates in low Earth orbit (LEO), just 780 km from the ground. This closer proximity reduces both signal latency and power consumption, ensuring a more reliable connection, especially during adverse weather conditions.
What makes Iridium’s network particularly valuable is its ability to offer truly global coverage, including over the polar regions, which are often overlooked by other satellite networks. This makes Iridium the only network capable of providing consistent, uninterrupted satellite coverage across 100% of the planet. This is crucial for industries and applications that demand reliable global connectivity, such as aviation, maritime, and emergency services. Iridium's network ensures that critical communications are always within reach, no matter where in the world they are needed.
The strategic role of satellite communication in drones and eVTOLs
Iridium’s advanced satellite communication technology is now being increasingly utilized in the drone and electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) sectors. Operating in low Earth orbit (LEO) with reduced power requirements for signal transmission, Iridium has engineered compact, lightweight transceivers that are ideal for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which often operate under strict power and weight constraints. Their technology underpins critical functions such as command and control (C2), remote identification, telemetry, and other essential operations, particularly in beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) scenarios.

- Swoop Aero, an Australian drone operator, leverages Iridium’s communication technology for vital medical deliveries in remote areas. In 2021, Iridium’s Core 9523 lightweight transceiver played a pivotal role in delivering vaccines to children in rural Vanuatu, reaching 33 communities and reducing delivery times by 130%.
- In September 2021, Iridium partnered with Platform Aerospace to support a UAV performing essential environmental monitoring in the Arctic for NASA. The Iridium mid-band transceiver provided robust real-time C2, telemetry streaming, and GPS connectivity, ensuring the safe and effective execution of this critical scientific mission.
- In 2023, Iridium collaborated with the French National Meteorological Service and drone manufacturer Boreal SAS on a mission to analyze atmospheric conditions over the Indian Ocean and improve cyclone formation modeling. Boreal UAVs relied on satellite connectivity via terminals built with Iridium’s Core 9523 transceiver, enabling reliable data transmission over long distances and real-time flight path adjustments to avoid adverse weather.
- American Aerospace Technologies’ AiRanger is another notable project supported by Iridium’s L-band satellite connectivity. In 2023, AiRanger successfully completed a flight trial and, in June of the same year, became the first UAS to meet FAA requirements for aircraft right-of-way BVLOS operations, specifically for infrastructure inspection in rural areas.

“Our satellites are essentially drones—flying beyond visual line of sight, 24/7. They might be bigger, but they operate just like drones,” explains Joe Darden. Drawing a clear parallel between the satellite and drone industries, Joe highlights why the drone industry should take cues from Iridium’s approach to automation and scalability.
“When we first launched our satellites in the early 2000s, we relied on about 50 spaceflight controllers—what we called the ‘front row’—who were heavily involved in manual tasks like issuing commands, deconflicting, adjusting positions, and correcting attitudes. Fast forward to today, and we’ve streamlined our operations to the point where just two people can manage the entire constellation on a twelve-hour shift, and they can do it from an iPhone.”
Automation has been the cornerstone of Iridium’s ability to scale effectively. By automating routine tasks and system monitoring, Iridium has significantly reduced the need for manual oversight. Automation not only cuts down on operational costs but also increases reliability and reduces the margin for human error. For example, automated systems handle real-time adjustments to satellite positions and communications, ensuring continuous and stable global coverage.
In the drone industry, the current operational model often requires multiple human roles to manage a single UAV—ground crew, visual observers, and pilots in command. This level of human involvement can be a major bottleneck as the industry seeks to scale operations, especially for tasks like beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) missions.
