In a conversation with Eszter Kovács, Co-founder and CEO of DroneTalks, at the 2024 Commercial UAV Expo in Las Vegas, key executives from Volatus Aerospace -- Danielle Gagne, Head of Marketing and Communications, and Abhinav (Abhi) Singhvi, Chief Financial Officer -- shared insights into the company's operations, growth strategies, and the evolving landscape of drone technology.
Strategic acquisitions: integrating technology and commercialisation with Drone Delivery Canada and more
Volatus Aerospace’s merger with Drone Delivery Canada (DDC), initiated in December of the previous year, represents a significant step in combining technological innovation with commercial expertise -- and a key moment for Volatus.
“The intent was to bring a blend of technology and the commercialisation engine,” explained Abhi.
How this merger would unfold was never really in question for DDC or Volatus.
“Drone Delivery Canada is a regional brand. It’s very obvious in its title,” noted Danielle, explaining Volatus’ branding strategy post-merger.
As such, DDC will function as a sister or regional brand under Volatus Aerospace Incorporated. The company will now trade under the stock ticker symbol of Drone Delivery Canada, reflecting a unified corporate identity. This approach ensures continuity while leveraging Volatus’ global reach.
As imaginable, this was one of the longest mergers–acquisitions Volatus has ever undertaken – and it seems to have been worth it. Drone Delivery Canada brings to the table technological prowess, regulatory expertise, and an Operations Control Centre capable of operating drones remotely and autonomously. In other words, the merger with DDC enhances Volatus Aerospace's operational capabilities, particularly in cargo delivery. Volatus Aerospace, of course, contributes with its ground-level commercialisation and operational expertise. Together, they’re shaping the future of autonomous drone operations – and it doesn’t stop there.
With over 18 acquisitions to date, Volatus Aerospace approaches mergers with a strategic focus on brand integration. This was one of the reasons why they chose to go public early on.
“For us, going public was about thinking globally,” Abhi explained. “It made our equity a second currency, enabling acquisitions like Drone Delivery Canada.”
This strategy supports the company's goal of expanding its global footprint and consolidating the fragmented drone industry. Being a publicly listed company facilitates mergers and acquisitions, enabling the use of equity as currency in transactions. This global vision ensures that Volatus Aerospace is positioned to lead in both technology and operations across borders.

How Volatus is navigating the investment landscape and funding challenges in 2024
The current investment climate presents unique challenges compared to five years ago. Investors now seek long-term, revenue-generating businesses with solid foundations and sound business practices.
“We’ve gone past the hype cycle,” said Danielle. “Investors are looking for longevity, for companies that demonstrate a strong foundation in good business practices.”
Abhi added, “Five years ago, drone companies were raising capital at multiples of 10x, 20x, even 30x revenue. Now, investors are much more mature. They’re educating themselves on the regulatory changes and assessing companies on their long-term potential.”
He noted a shift from hype-driven investment to a more structured approach, with investors assessing companies based on maturity, revenue, and service categories.
Despite challenges in raising capital, Volatus Aerospace remains optimistic about the availability of investment opportunities. The company emphasises the importance of networking and seeking assistance when needed, recognising that collaboration is key to industry growth.
“If you don’t ask, you don’t get,” Abhi advised. “That applies to both partnerships and financing in the drone industry.”
By exploring diverse funding sources, including venture capitalists, high-net-worth individuals, and family offices, Volatus Aerospace aims to sustain its growth trajectory.
Consolidation as a sign of industry maturity
The drone industry is undergoing significant consolidation, a natural progression in its evolution.
“We’re seeing an industry that’s much more mature,” said Danielle. “Clients are looking for advanced capabilities and reliable partners, which signals a shift toward long-term, value-driven relationships.”
As access to capital becomes more selective, companies are merging to pool resources and expertise. Abhi emphasised that mergers and acquisitions offer opportunities for stronger companies to emerge, leveraging economies of scale and synergies.
“For us, being a publicly traded company has been instrumental,” he said.
“When capital is scarce, acquisitions become cheaper,” Abhi added. “It’s an opportunity for larger, well-capitalised firms like Volatus to strategically acquire companies, making both entities stronger.”
This trend leads to the formation of stronger entities capable of delivering comprehensive solutions and advancing the industry collectively.
How Volatus is building public acceptance and engagement, starting with the SEAR programme
Public acceptance and engagement are crucial for the widespread adoption of drone technology – and Volatus is aware.
The company advances and engages in initiatives like the Science Experiential Aerial Research (SEAR) Programme, designed by Matthew Johnson, Vice President, Education Programs at Volatus Aerospace, which collaborates with school districts, communities, and universities to address local challenges using drone technology. “We’re teaching students how to fly drones, collect data, and analyse it to solve real-world problems,” shared Danielle. “The data collected is then used to create AI algorithms that become part of the solution.”
Designed to foster interest in future career technologies, this programme connects students with industry, academia, and government to address real-world sustainability issues within their communities. Using drones equipped with advanced sensors, students collect and analyse data to tackle challenges such as detecting Dutch Elm Disease, monitoring crop health, or classifying litter on coastlines.
Under the guidance of experienced professionals, participants learn essential skills such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and regulatory compliance. They also gain hands-on experience piloting drones and training machine learning algorithms. As a culmination, students can attempt certification exams, such as the Basic RPAS Pilot Certification in Canada, further preparing them for careers in the rapidly evolving UAV industry.
The SEAR Programme has been recognised globally, including winning the prestigious Energy Globe National Award in the Youth category for its environmental innovation.
